Question paying fired employees

Hi,

Are there any rules saying when you have to pay a fired employee? Do they have to be paid within a certain number of days or just whenever the next pay period is? We have one that was just fired and came in demanding his check saying we are legally bound to pay him within two days. I'm not sure of this but our next pay date is Friday (tomorrow) so I denied him his check today. I didn't have it anyway since it comes from a payroll service. Any thoughts on the matter anyone?? Your help is sincerely appreciated.

Whitney

Every state has different rules. In California you must produce the check within 3 days or face fines.
