| how much detail can a manager give about another employee termination i have been fired from my job for theft. i admitted to it, and met with loss prevention signed promissory note and the whole deal.my manager was not in on this meeting, exactly how much detail can he give another employee,in this case a cashier. this is not the fist time she has had knowledge i dont think a cashier should have about me.her and the manager have a not so professional relationship, she calls him big daddy if that says anything. i had talked about this issue months ago and a recent as a couple weeks ago expressing my feelings about the matter.you see she knows my uncles fiance and call her and tells her everything.i called h/r and was informed that she may lose her job, she didnt, as mad as i am about her running her mouth im even more angry at the manager telling intimate details about work situations to an employee who is not mgt.i was told they wanted to handle this as discretely as possible.anything i can do here? |

| Anything you can do? Well, only one thing comes to mind...........DON'T STEAL FROM YOUR BOSS. Forgive me...........maybe I don't understand what you're asking. You STOLE from your employer, committed the crime of theft, but your complaint is that they aren't being DISCRETE because they are DISCUSSING it?? I agree it is an unprofessional thing to do. Very much so. But, then again, so is stealing. I honestly have NO idea what else to say. |

| you are right and i am paying for what i did! but as i said this isnt just about the theft, this has happened before, her having information she should not have.the theft is being delt with, im concerned about the issue of the manager discussing matters to an employee who isnt in a position where she needs or is entitled to know. as i said i have discussed this with another manager at least twice about this problem, as recently as two weeks ago.everyone makes mistakes and even those FEW of us that do still have rights i guess.so if you dont know how much or what type of information a manager can or can not discuss then thank you anyway. |

| You are correct---I have never taken a class in law school called "manager etiquette". People gossiping about you does not fall under any law. It isn't a nice thing to do, neither is it professional. But it is not against the law. However, there are laws that pertain to things the employer says to future employers who call for a reference. They are not allowed to slander you or defame you in any way. But, the only * absolute* defense to defamation is the truth. The answer to your question is there are no laws against gossiping--as unprofessional and as unseemly as it may be. It honestly surprises me that someone with no concern about stealing from their boss has ethical concerns about gossip. Just seems a little bit ironic. * happy?* Do you follow JESUS this closely, JDMBA? Stick to proof reading and forgo those silly personal comments---amazing I never have to resort to reflecting on my opinion of YOUR education, specialization, or personal life. You appear very foolish resorting to the same. Was there something helpful you wanted to add for the poster besides my MISSING a word? How silly you look. Focus on adding something 1. relevant and 2. positive ---and if you can swing it 3. ACCURATE. I routinely encourage people to use the ignore feature of this site, but I have never been compelled to use it myself ---not even with my little banned friend. I am leading by example---Jdmba your postings no long appear on my screen. Shame on you for appearing every six months posting negative, inaccurate and spiteful things. | thank you, i do have concerns about my actions and im very ashamed and i have been getting counseling and will continue to get help.im sure it does seem ironic, in fact i know it does.the gossip this woman is spreading has some of the truth but i know for a fact she has added her own version and included things that are not true and did not happen.like i said she has called people that i know and im getting this information from them and its hard enough to tell friends what happened and then to have to say," well that part didnt happen and i dont know why she would say that",is a little hard to explain.but thanks for your frankness and im not being sarcastic. |

| Regardless of what you have done, you do not deserve to be talked about in a malicious manner. If you can prove that she said things that are 1. not true and 2. that those things actually damaged you (i.e. like kept you from getting a job) then you can sue for defamation. Good luck. |

Huh? If I'm accused of defaming somebody, my only possible defense is that the alleged statements were the truth? ![]() |

| To the original poster, perhaps if you went above the managers head to the next in command and pointed out your feelings about this being inappropriate, it would be more effective. People like your manager "friend" with loose tongues often find something else to talk about---the feeding frenzy of gossip will die down. Good luck. |
