Georgia Employment Laws PLEASE HELP
Hi,
I have a question that has been weighing on my mind for many years now. I work a part-time job delivering Newspapers and have done so for the past 10 years. Over these years the company has been through many changes. One change is how the company insists on how they say who can and cannot be in your personal vehicle.
We use our own personal vehicle, all employees there do. We pay the car paymants. We pay the insurance. We pay for all repairs. Three years ago they started having trouble with children in the warehouse. Yes, At that time they allowed children in the warehouse.
First rule: No kids in the warehouse. Kids had to stay in your vehicle while you were gettimng your papers together. That was understandable.
6 months later Rule 2: No kids in the car while you were on the job, anyone in the car with you had to be 18+ and the company was not responsible for them should there be an accident. We were asked to sign a contract saying we would abide by this rule. I was hesitant, but signed anyway. A couple people got fired for breaking the rule by bringing the kids with them anyway.
Now Rule 3: We were told noone could be in our car while on the job.
My wife has rode with me for 10 years, and now can no longer be in our car while I am delivering newspapers. I just don't see how this can be so. I understand that i am on company time, but how in the world can they tell me who can be in my car. If an accident should happen my regular car insurance would cover my wife. I just don't get it. Is this legal?
I really want someone who can help me or point me in the right direction. This type of stuff has been going on for years. If it's legal then I'll just shut my mouth. If not then I am prepared to move forward with action. It's not the point that my wife can't go with me. It's the whole idea of them telling me who can and cannot be in my vehicle. PLEASE HELP!
