Uncomfortable at work

I started a new job yesterday and it was a big let down. The person that I was supposed to report to did not come in to the office. So I was there just basically being a floater. There was a worker there that kind of has a bad attitude and acted like she didn't want to help me or train me on anything related to the job. She slammed papers, filing cabinets, and just basically acted as if she didn't want to be there. I was trying to make small talk with her but she acted cold. She would talk some, but I could tell she didn't want to be bothered by me. She had no problem talking to others in the office and laughing with them. On top of that the building is disgusting. Men and women use the same bathroom and I was told that they had critters (as in bugs etc) and I can believe it. Also the building is so cold and everyone has to have a personal heater.

But the biggest let down was that I was subjected to subtle racist comments and a lot of foul language. The thing is that I am the only African American that works there. I treat everyone with respect and I can be friends with anyone of any race and I would never say or think anything racist. I am not used to working in unprofessional places like these and I am seriously considering finding something else.

It just seems like the place is so unorganized, unclean, and just way too casual to be taken seriously. If my supervisor wasn't going to come in yesterday she should have called me and told me. Now I am faced with the same things today because she might not show up then. I just think it is very unethical and unprofessional to not show up on a new employee's first day. I wonder if she knows that those kinds of things go on in her office? It appears that just because she didn't come in the employees took advantage and did what they wanted and said what they wanted. I will definitely be letting her know how I feel and what was said.

Do any of you think I should give this a chance or should I move on? I don't think I am overreacting in this situation. I have had a strange feeling about this job for about a week now before I started yesterday. I think I should move on. I should not have to be uncomfortable in a work environment and subject to people's subtle racist comments, but at the same time nothing like that should be going on. I have never in my life been in such a bad environment with crude co-workers that could care less about helping new employees. Any advice would be helpful.

Given the job market, and perhaps your obvious ability to obtain a job, I would advise you to send out resumes and use lunch time for short interviews... or after work. There is no reason for anyone to be uncomfortable at work. If those employees have been pulling racial stunts, their manager needs to know exactly what was said, so write it down... keep a log but don't let them see you making it. Keep it on your person if necessary... small notebook. When it comes time to give notice, give your top manager in the business or the person who hired you a short interview and pass on the notebook with names as to who said what.

I suspect everybody has a need for diversity in their businesses, but you don't need to be harrassed. Don't harm yourself financially nor should you make enemies in this company while you are there... but look for another position. This company apparently does not have an education program to promote diversity. And perhaps their employees see that as racism coming from the top... I know I do. These days you should not ever see negative remarks solely for the "benefit" of the different employee. It is their loss and one day it will come to haunt them.
