Workplace Searches

I am looking for information on the legality of including an individuals vehicle (while on company property) into a Workplace Search Policy.

I currently have a client who has expressed an interest in instituting a policy in light of inventory being unaccounted for (small items such as tools, etc).

Are there any state-specific issues I should be aware of (NY) that would limit them from doing this?

Any assistance is appreciated.

I'm afraid I don't know the specifics in NY. However this doesn't sound too kosher, even with the employee's express permission. Under criminal law employee vehicles are often treated the same as an employee home. Can you randomly search an employee's home, even if they agree as part of their employment to it?

I don't think the fact that the car is located on company property matters too much.

Then again, as I said, I don't know what the NY law is on this issue.
