Default F-1 to Visa Waiver

I'm currently in the US on an F-1 OPT. My OPT expired may 2006. I understand that you're allowed an additional 180 days allowance to stay after, whic is what i did to look for a job and that didn't work out. The 180 day period ends in oct 2006 If I leave the U.S after that 180 day period has passed, say dec 2006, and choose to return in the near future on a Visa Waiver, would I be granted admission or would it be denied because of my previous overstaying my F-1 OPT? My I-94 card says D/S on it.

I checked with my consulate and they said that as long as i have a return ticket i can use the visa waiver program. For obvious reasons I did not mention the earlier portion here. Please help.
