My 13 yeard old son recently started skipping school, we discovered that he's being bullied on his way to school. He walks. I reported this to the school counselor and she reported it to the police. After two weeks they still have not spoken with my son. I drove him to school when I could and then had an older friend of his walk him. However I work two jobs and the friend eventually had to go home. The first time he had to go alone again he cut. I called the police officer and was told he'd been too busy to talk to the child. He stated that some little boys just don't like to go to school. The man has NEVER spoken to this child!!! I called the school board to ask at what point the school assumes responsibility for a child when they leave home and was told "I don't know." THe little guy cut school again yesterday and all I received was an automated message telling me that he wasn't there. No counselor, no police officer. I'm at my wits end here. I really can't afford to give up either of my jobs but my child has a right to an education and an education is important to his future.

Maybe you should actually go down to the police station to file a report instead of calling.
If that doesn't work talk to the child's parents. I would have to say that the school would be responsible for only what activities happen on school grounds. So if something happens to your son on the way to school then they would not be responsible. You may also think about an alternate route to school or public transportation. |

I'm a retired teacher.
Does your son know WHO this bully is? "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". Go to the school and speak with the principal; state that you want this taken care of NOW. It should be easy if your child knows the kid's name. And it could be handled without your son being identified. The disciplinarian (usually the assistant principal) can talk to the bully and his parents and just say there have been parent complaints...and warn what the consequences will be if it happens again. Talk to the principal today and don't take NO for an answer. If the principal is unwilling to help you, then go to his boss..the DISTRICT office. Something will happen then. |

Two questions:
1. What is the locale of this school (i.e., city and state)? Distinctingly different policies exist among municipalities concerning bullying, and *some* states have legislation in effect about consequences for bullying. Interestingly, the nature and degree of state legislation against bullies tends to vary substantially based upon a state's political majority. 2. How would you describe your child's behavior at school, academically and behaviorally? How has this changed since the bullying began? Hope things have been improving as of late! Brad |
