I married an american citizen 2 years ago. I am a permanent resident conditioned to stay married with this person for two more years since I got my residence. I have a 15 months old baby from this marriage. Since almost the beggining of the marriage my husband showed to be violent and abusived. He hasn't bitten me yet but it is the only thing left. In the last big argument we had, he called me names and threaten with taken the baby away from me because I'd be deported. I don't know what to do. I am not happy living with this person and I am affraid for my own life. According with some people, until you dont get bitten it is not considered domestic violence, what it is ridiculous to me, what about emotional abuse?
Do I have to live with this person for one more year in order to keep my status and no to put in risk my baby? He is so agresive that he can kill me one of this days and then will be too late for everybody. Please, I need advise. Thanks |

Consult an immigration lawyer or, if you can't afford one, try to get help through legal aid or a battered women's shelter. You may be able to stay in the country under provisions of the Violence Against Women Ac which protect immigrant spouses who are victims of domestic violence.

No it is not true that you be biten before it is considered domestic violence. This website may be helpful if you can't afford an attorney:
