Since he is an adult, paternity may not be the issue here. Has he considered a simple name change?

A friend of mine had his natural father leave him and his mother at a young age. When he turned 16, he went to court and had his name changed to his step fathers name. Obviously, he wasn't adopted--his goal was just a name change. And he accomplished it.

Perhaps this would be a possibility.

Who is bringing this action? If you are, why? Why isn't the son, as an adult, doing this?

This hearing isn't about fault. And, I cannot imagine your being there helped the matter at all. Your son is an adult--maybe your being there bothered the judge in some way ( I am not sure). I also cannot see the petition and I do not know what your son was asked, or what exactly was said, so I cannot speak to that.

Your goal, then, is not paternity, but rather a simple name change? In what state do you reside?

This should have been a matter of filling out the petition and the judge asking a few questions, and that was the end of that. Is there any chance you can get another judge?

Where do you live?
