Intellectual Property Lawyer is sought for BBC in London, UK!
We’re looking for a qualified and experienced Intellectual Property lawyer with a minimum of 3 years relevant PQE to join our team, based in London. This is a permanent role.
Our team provides comprehensive IP law advice across all parts of the BBC Group relating to trade marks, copyright, television formats, confidential information and patents. We also advise on contractual disputes relating to rights issues. The BBC Legal Division is responsible for developing and implementing the BBC's legal strategy and for providing legal advice to the BBC. The Division is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office; Editorial Legal (comprising Programme Legal Advice and Litigation); Intellectual Property; Workplace and Information Rights; Employment; Commercial Legal (encompassing Fair Trading and Competition) and Technology Legal.
Acting as a lawyer within the Intellectual Property team, you’ll work with many different areas of the BBC Group, advising on a variety of matters such as: copyright; trade marks; television formats confidential information and contractual matters relating to rights issues. Whilst this role involves predominantly contentious work, you will also undertake non contentious work providing advice and support to the Rights Legal and Business Affairs teams and other parts of the BBC Group.
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will need specialist knowledge of all aspects of UK IP law and some knowledge of European and international IP law combined with experience of civil court procedure and dispute resolution. You will have good academic qualifications and knowledge of the principles of contract law as well as IP law. In addition, you’ll have strong analytical skills and be a good communicator, with experience of building relationships across a range of people and within a team. You'll have excellent written and oral communication skills and experience of advising clients directly, in person, on the telephone and in writing. Knowledge of the structure, objectives and values of the BBC and Broadcasting issues generally is highly desirable. A familiarity with a variety of online public and proprietary legal databases (eg UK Patent Office website, PLC, Lexis Nexis, Saegis etc) and experience of undertaking legal research is essential. A genuine enthusiasm for the role and a willingness to take on responsibilities in this busy team is important.
