I worked for the Opened Door Adoption Agency in Thomasville, GA over a dozen years ago and I know some laws have changed, but it was, at that time IMPOSSIBLE to place a child for adoption without the fathers consent--married or not. If the bio dad was never named, we still had to make a "good faith" effort to find the man, AND even if the guy never appeared---the child was still considered "placed, but at risk" (of the guy showing up later wanting the child). NO ONE but a court that has just cause can terminate your sons rights--in other words, the child is as MUCH his as it is HERS. Is his name on the birth certificate? There is simply no way this is a legal adoption, unless, of course, there are important relevant details being omitted.
Also, another thing to note--even if the child werent his biologically, and if he was married to the birth mother, legally it IS his child, until the bio dad is named, tested, etc ( in MY state, anyway).
