I work for an employer in Michigan and have found myself in an extremely complicated situation. I will do my best to keep this post as concise as possible but please bear with me!
Last year I divorced my husband of 5 years. He also happens to be my supervisor where I work (he's 1 of 6 Supervisors there). Coincidentally enough, my job performance (or should I say my perceived job performance) has become very poor. By this I mean I am constantly being called into the office to be reprimanded by either one of the other supervisors or the general manager. It has now gotten to the point where I am now on "probation". I have been a loyal employee of the company for 8 years, with all of my previous performance reviews being "excellent". I had never been written up before this past year. Now, I am constantly being written up, where other employees do the same things and don't get written up. Coincidence? I think not. My ex-husband is an extremely vindictive person who I feel will stop at nothing until I am fired. In addition he has caused problems with fellow co-workers and friends by spreading rumors while on company time. My question is: isn't this a conflict of interest? Is there any sort of legal protection for me? I realize Michigan is an at will employment state but this feels like harrassment. I love my job but feel that I'm being forced out of a job because of my ex-husband and other supervisors making my work environment extremely unpleasant. I feel that I am being set up to fail. By no means am I saying I've been perfect and I don't like to play into the role of "victim" but this is absolutely ridiculous. Thank you very much in advance! Any advice is greatly appreciated. |

There is nothing in the law with the respect of conflict of interest. I agree that you are being railroaded. Have you gone to your HR dept. and let them know what is going on? While it is not illegal for bosses to be jerks and idiots (Although it should be) As far as harassment---your circumstances you describe don't meet the definition under the law.

Thank you so much for your reply! I had a feeling there wasn't any legal recourse. I haven't gone to HR because I honestly don't trust anyone in that department..... they are out to protect their own (meaning the other people in management/supervisory positions). The "regular" folks don't matter as much.
The thing that gets me, is there is SO much favoritism there. Take for instance the things that I have been written up for. There is another employee (same job classification as me) that does the same things (actually much worse) but as far as I know she doesn't receive any discipline because she is known to suffer from ADHD and everything is attributed to that. Up until recently she was my very best friend so I'm pretty sure I would have known if she was getting in trouble (I say WAS my best friend, thanks to the psycho ex-husband). Funny thing is, I have the same diagnosis. Management is well aware of this (especially my ex-husband), but I am not cut any slack. That really makes me angry but I doubt there is anything I can do about that either! Thanks again for your advice! |
