I was fired back in July from by job as a computer tech. Basically I work for my boss a family owned business for 7 years. His reason for letting me go was I was being to critical of the way he was running his business. (The way he treated people)... Anyway several employees have since left his employment. Including a retired sheriff I was told by these people that my empolyer told them that I was fired for stealing a power supply.. about a $25.00 item.. mind you that I have had the keys to the store for many years and had plenty of oppourtunity to rip them off if I wanted too (laptops monitors etc...). I went to work for the compitition which further enraged him because I took my clients with me. After speaking to one of clients they told me the same that I was fired for stealing a power supply, I have never stole a dime from this man and cannot undersand why he would be saying this other than to discredit me or make me look dishonest. Do you think this would be Slander?

Just going off the facts you stated, generally speaking I'd say you were slandered. In most states, falsely accusing somebody of criminal conduct to third parties is defamation per se, which means damages are assumed. However, if you cannot show actual damages, you probably wouldn't get much in a lawsuit (I've heard of people being awarded a symbolic $1).

I think from what you have said, your employer made a very slanderous statement.
Can you provide any documentation? I know you may not see much in monentary gain from a law suit , but you should still be able to do something legaly to maintain your good name and and reputation..if you win maybe they could at least get him to cover court cost and legal fees! best of luck!! I know how you feel. |
