credit check for employment under tenant screening

Can you employer check you credit report under any permissible purpose? I worked at an apartment complex. She (the general manager) ran my credit under tenant screening and not employment screening. So on my credit report it has an inquiry for tenant screening. So it looks like I tried to live there and bacause I never have it looks like I didn't get approved. I have two other employees that checked their credit reports and it has the same thing. I don't if this is legal or not. I don't know what I can do to fix the problem. I have talked to Transunion, Rentgrow (the company that pulled my CR from Transunion for my ex-boss), and I have made a complaint with the FTC. But it is still on my credit. What should my recourse be or do I even have one?
