| Want out We've been together 15 years, married 8. He's unemployed (5 years) and I've supported him: food, shelter, spending money, etc and have paid on all the credit cards. Years ago, I refinanced the house I bought (femme sole) way before the marriage - and had to bring him onto the note. I also inherited a rental from my brother - and included my husband on that. Can I get them both back without having to sell and give him half of the proceeds? He claims to not want either piece of property. He's also developed a serious drinking problem and I'm afraid he'll get into an accident and further ruin our/my credit. He's driven us deep into debt. I need to get out before I am forced to declare bankrupcy. I am also in need of either pro-bono or reduced legal defense. I don't mind the supporting him - but it's the alcohol problem that has me wanting to leave. He's a mean drunk, verbally abusive and amazinly defensive. He's left several times, only to come back, weaving and ugly at very early hours of the night, totally ruining any chance of a full night's sleep. I'm approaching 60 and really don't want to spend the rest of my life alone, but also do not want to spend it like this. AA is no option - he refuses to go. What do I do now? |

| First of all, you aren't going to find free divorce help unless you go to a library and research it or buy information online as to how to do it step by step. Paying legal fees is never convenient and no one really can 'afford' it. I am not sure why you 'had' to add him into the note----and getting his interest in the properties terminated is going to be difficult which is why you are going to need a good attorney. You don't say where you live and laws vary from state to state---so I don't even know if you live in a community property state. Most lawyers give free or low cost consultations. I would call one and ask and explain your situation clearly. It may not be as expensive as you think. You stand to lose more money than the legal fees would be. I commend you for being willing to get out of this situation. Good luck. |
