What factors do the courts use to establish alimony and length of time of alimony?

All states have different guidelines when it comes to alimony, also known as spousal support.

Some of these factors include but are not limited to:

The financial needs of both parties.
The earning capacity of both parties.
The standard of living established during the marriage.
The duration of the marriage.
The physical and mental state of each party.
Contributions to education, career or household.

The length of time alimony must be paid is typically determined by the length of the marriage. In some states, if the marriage lasts over 10 years than alimony is indefinite.
