He's posting lies on internet

We used to have a website that our families could look at & now he is posting lies about me on it! What can I do?

It sounds like defamation to me... There are two types of defamation. Libel and Slander. Libel, which is what you would argue your husband has committed, is the publication of a false statement which injures one's business or personal reputation.

Besides showing the above definition you must also prove that you have been damaged by the lies posted on the internet. Most states allow reputational harm. The problem I see is that if only family has seen this and have not changed their opinion about you it will be hard to show that your reputation has been damaged. Damages can be tangible (loss of a job or money damages) or intangible as mentioned above (loss of respect or reputation).

You will want to speak to an attorney to determine the best course of action. Most likely this will involve a lawsuit if your husband will not voluntarily cease his actions or if you have suffered damages as a result of his lies.

Under the common law, you do not need to prove damages in a case for either libel or slander per se. This matter sounds like libel. The question is simply do you meet the elements of defamation which are:

• A statememnt made by one person
  about another person
  that hurts their reputation
  heard by a thrid person

My question would be if you do not have actual damages, what is the amount of money you would sue for?
