simple question, missing deposit

Where I used to work a deposit went missing. I was the one responsible for the deposit. I'm still under investigation and I just found the deposit. What should I do and what kind of trouble should I expect to be in?

Define "FOUND IT". Did you take it and decide to repay it or return it? Is there any reasonable explanation as to what happened to the money before it was "found"?

If it was truly lost (which your posting does NOT seem to indicate) it should be a small matter to just return it with an apology. It may cost you your job for being careless, but hey...its better than going to jail for theft.

You left out a lot of information so your question is difficult to answer accurately.
