orange county court tommorrow burglary charges-help

Son aged 22 arrested yesterday for theft of 2 high priced surf boards.
He was told to go to station befored arrest to give statement and was arrested at that time. Something he told them led to recovery of surf boards.
I do not know if he is guilty or not. bail was set at $20,000. I could not afford to bail him out. He has no prior offenses. What will happen at tomorrows court? Can he ask for a public defender berfoe he says guilty or not guilty. Evidence is a blurry video. I'm afraid they will get him to say guilty. He is ADD and not able to read or write well. Which is why I'm am so concerned. He has never stolen before so I am not convinced that if he was involed he acted alone. He may have been following orders because this occured at his work, which he loves. Any help, thoughts, opions will be appreciated.
