Joint Custody

How do I obtain joint custody of an infant that I have been taking care of since birth? I do not want to take full custody from the mother but she has agreed to share custody with me. The father has agreed to give up his rights if need be. But to protect myself and the child I want to legally be a part of the childs life.

Perhaps it would be more advantageous to have guardianship of the child, if you have been her sole caretaker since birth. I am not sure custody is a good fit or a wise request. If there is a reason the mother and father aren't caring for the child and it has fallen upon you to do so, I would petition the court for legal guardianship of the child.

Also, the courts are reluctant to terminate a natural fathers rights in absence of another father (i.e. the mother remarries). And, termination of those rights does not necessarily mean that the father no longer would be required to pay child support.

Just a few things about which to think.
