I got served

My Ex just handed me a petition for primary custody. There is no previous court order, just what we agreed to as shared joint custody. How am I supposed to respond ? Should I just show up for the meeting with the master ? Should I file a counter suit to keep shared custody ?

If you want any type of custody you will want to respond. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Primary custody typically means that the other parent is only entitled to limited amount of visitation. If this is not what you want then you will need to respond.

If you have questions regarding the petition it may be helpful to go to the courthouse in which it was filed. They often have someone to assist with family law questions or they can at least tell you what you need to file. I would not wait until the hearing date to try and establish your rights.
