insurance company is suing me

My son (age 17) accidentally dropped a table onto my daughter's landlord's car and caused damage to the windsheild of the car. it was deemed an accident by the landlord as well as the police officer who investigated the incident. the landlord stated to my son before the officer as well as before my son-in-law that my son's responsibility was to pay the deductible of $500.00 and that her insurance would pay the remaining. my son paid her $200.00 in cash and i mailed her a check for $300.00 with the words paid in full on the check and was cashed by her.

The landlord's insurance company has turned the matter over to a collection agency that is sending me threatening letters for the remaining balance of the repairs to the car. am i liable for this balance?

Thank you,

Lucy Ann

If it wasn't the man's fault, why should his insurance company pay? If, for example, the damage had been done by your sons car, would you expect the owner of the damaged car to pay for the damage? The owner of the car doesn't have the authority to tell you "paid in full". Even if it was an accident, your son is still responsible. I commend you for being willing to pay for the damages and commend the guy for being willing to accept the deductible, but the truth is, its the insurance companies call-----why should they pay for damage their client did not inflict?
