Purchasing an existing business

My husband is a barber and he is wanting to purchase the barbershop from his employer, who is the owner. His employer is about to retire. My question: I was told that we should have a "goodwill contract" drawn up in order to prevent employer from opening up down the street and taking clients with him? Is this true? And what is a goodwill contract.
