Default Define Next of Kin

Sorry I'm not exactly up on real estate legalities but if a person dies unexpectedly and their property goes to the "next of kin" who exactly falls under that criteria? Does the hierarchy go sibling, child, cousin, niece/nephew, etc...? Just curious.

Assuming there is no will or trust and property is distributed under the intestacy laws of a state, it generally goes spouse, kids, parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, and others. This can vary from state to state however.

If you really want to know, I'd do a google or other internet search. I'm sure you could find this information on-line.

Best.

http://www.legalmatch.com/law-librar...y-lawyers.html may also help. Apparently, Leona Helmsley missed this one.
