Please I need Legal Advice

I signed a lease to own contract in March of 2007 on a Barrel horse, we had the opt. to buy in Oct. of 2007. We paid our lease on time and everything went great. End of sept. I suffered a heart attack and we contacted the owners told them we would like to buy the horse, however we would need to make payments. They agreed. We never resigned any new contract and nothing was in writing after Oct. Everything was fine until early May of this year. We got into an agruement with this couple over and different discussion and they started demanding the whole amount right then and there. We told them we could not come up with that big of a chunk but we would pay them what we could. Well, they waited until we were to be out of town and came and took the horse off our property. We called the law, luckliy my father in law saw the vehicle. They refuse to refund the money we have paid and they have the horse. Criminal Trespassing warrents are pending, we have filed a small claims on them for the amount we are out and vet expenses. They in turn filed on us a counter suit saying we have not paid the lease in full which is a flat out lie, I have the checks to prove it. So I was wanting some advice on how to present my case in court. Thanks, Addie
