Them taking three months to perhaps follow company protocol and verify the legitimacy of their position as well as the facts in question in no way voids the fact that you did not abide by the rules of the establishement. How does their taking three months mean they haven't the right to enforce the rules? Three YEARS maybe, but three months? Thats merely a few weeks.
What you are describing regarding what "they said" is hearsay. I am not sure what the relevance is of the relationship ending. The ending isn't relevant. The fact it happened is ( per your employer, not me).
If your employer DID say those things to other employees regarding your situation, they were doing so to protect your privacy and avoid discussing the issue and making it fodder for water cooler chat. Obviously, they DON'T feel that way---they canned ya, right?
I said all of that to say that employers make all kinds of rules----if you don't agree with them, don't work there. But, don't agree to abide by the rules and then break them and expect legal recourse.
If you have legal grounds, I cannot imagine what it is.
