Discrimination by employer a/c spouse with terminal disability
Hi there. I'd like an opinion....my spouse was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimers Disease several years ago and now requires 24/7 care. My husband lives at home and attends an adult daycare 5 days a week so that I can continue to work full time which helps tremendously with the high cost of care.
For the past 4 years, my manager has allowed me to telecommute which means that I have worked from home 3 days a week. The company I work for has a very liberal policy regarding flex time, working from home and has been cited as one of the best 100 companies for working mothers to work for.
Last year, I began working for a new manager. Although she initially allowed me to continue to work from home 3 days a week, it was clear that she was very uncomfortable with the concept of flex time and working from home. She eventually asked me to come to the office 1 day a week and decrease my "work at home days" to 2 days a week - which I did.
In August, my manager suddenly asked me to fill out a formal "telecommuting application" to request formal permission to work from home - again which I did, however, it has become more and more clear to me that my manager is gearing up to force me to work in the office 5 days a week. Let me point out here that 1) I work as a writer which is very condusive to working from home and does not require me to physically be in the office, and 2) I personally know of 12 individuals in my department who work either flex time or work from home and have not been asked to change their schedules or to fill out a formal telecommuting application.
I am still waiting for a response to my application.
Things have gotten pretty bad at work. I have good reason to believe that my manager is trying to get rid of me.
Does anyone else think that I am being discriminated against or is it just me?
